The first Yule Log I ever had was chocolate cake with a coffee buttercream swirl. It had a thick layer of chocolate frosting, distressed to look like tree bark and tiny meringue mushrooms. For a kid, cutting into a cake that looks like a piece of wood was insanely cool.
Our newest cookie keeps the coffee swirl but replaces the frosting with Oreo crumb 'bark'. So, it might not have any meringue mushrooms on it but, almost 50 years later, I still think this Yule Log is pretty cool.
