What’d we miss? Cinco De Mayo

So much more than sombreros and margs at Happy Hour, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the incredible victory of the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 — when, against all odds, they overcame the invasion of French troops moving to seize Mexico City.

Although it is not a holiday that is widely celebrated in Mexico,* May 5th has become a day to celebrate Mexican-American identity, promote social consciousness, and build solidarity within the community. And, as Angelenos, it’s important to honor the histories and heritage of those who lived on this land before (and with) us.

*Actually, Cinco de Mayo is often referenced as an American Civil War victory more than anything else: If the people of Puebla hadn’t defeated the French Army, Napoleon III might’ve taken control of Mexico and used the geographic foothold to fund the Confederacy... Even more proof that the U.S. as we know it would not exist without the Mexican community.
