This might just be the quintessential deli bakery cookie. And, for something as simple as an iced butter cookie, people can get very serious about what makes the perfect Black & White. Melanie, a native New Yorker, has definite opinions!
After lots (and lots) of taste testing, we've come up with ours -- it's dense and buttery with hints of vanilla and almond; the "black" half is intensely chocolaty and the "white" side is sweet and vanilla-y and, most importantly, the icing will crack when you bite into it.
